Power Management Commands PowerPanel also provides power management commands that you can use to activate specific power management functions and to control power for a specific device. You can use these commands to override a profile setting or initiate an immediate action. 62 Displaying Battery Information Icon Description Standby Puts the system into Standby mode, a power management state that saves the state of the system and peripheral devices in memory (RAM). To return the system to the active state, press any key or the power button on your notebook. The system writes the state of the system and peripheral devices to the hard disk and turns off the system power. To return the system to the original state, use the power button to turn on power. The system saves the data in the Save to Disk Partition on the hard drive. LCD (Video) Standby (Windows Me only) Turns off the video display to save power. If you turn off the Video Standby timer, the display remains active except when the system enters Standby mode. The video display system is one of the largest consumers of power in the system. Conserving Battery Power When using the notebook with a battery, the LCD display and the hard drive can be set to switch off automatically to conserve battery power. See "Power Management Profiles" for details. Displaying Battery Information You can display detailed information for the battery in your notebook. The following sections briefly describe how to display your notebook's general battery information. In the Display Properties screen, drag the icons of Monitor #1 or Monitor #2, to a new position that is relative to the other. Click OK to apply the change. Monitor #1 is preset as your notebook's LCD display and Monitor #2 is preset for external display. Releasing the Dual Display Setting Follow steps 1-4 in the section "Selecting Dual Display Mode" . Right-click on Monitor #2, and then click on Enabled to release the setting. Some software is not compatible with Dual Display mode. 69 Change to Current Document Title 70 Adding Memory Your notebook is equipped with two memory slots, and comes with a 128 MB memory module preinstalled in one of the slots, thus providing 256 MB maximum memory capacity. In the future you may want to install an additional memory module, to expand the functionality of your notebook and increase its data processing speed, especially when several software applications are open at the same time. To upgrade memory, use only PC100(CL2) SDRAM SO-DIMM with gold lead contacts. Related Safety Guidelines Sony recommends that memory upgrades be performed by an authorized Sony Service Center. To find the nearest center or agent, see http://www. sony. com/ pcsupport. Be careful when installing a memory module in your notebook, and be sure to observe the proper safety precautions listed below. Mistakes that occur when installing or removing a memory module may cause a malfunction. The procedures described below assume familiarity with the general terminology associated with personal computers and with the safety practices and regulatory compliance required for using and modifying electronic equipment. Disconnect the system from its power source and from any telecommunications links, networks, or modems before you open the system or follow any of the procedures described below. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage disk drives and other components. [. . . ] Contact the software publisher or designated provider for technical support. When I click an application icon, the message "You must insert the application CD into your optical drive" appears and the software does not start. Some titles require specific files that are located on the application CD. Make sure you place the CD in the tray with the label side facing up. I can not use the DVgate software. If your notebook is using the Ultimate Battery Life profile for its power saving mode, you cannot use DVgate or Smart Connect software. [. . . ]
